Rare pencil signed proof impression.
Begun in 1860 and completed for exhibition in 1864, this etching was later published in its only issued edition by the Etching Club in the very scarce 1879 portfolio under the title Rustic Courtship. Pencil signed proofs of this etching by Richard Redgrave are very rare indeed.
Richard Redgrave was one of the founder members of the Etching Club. A man of formidable energy, he was not only successful as a genre and landscape painter but was an enterprising designer and art administrator who established over 100 schools of art throughout this country. Richard Redgrave played a vital part in creating the interest in design and industry that led to the Great Exhibition of 1851 and to the foundation of the South Kensington Museums.
The Spring Head combines a typical example of Richard Redgrave’s highly accomplished genre scenes with his favourite subject matter of densely wooded landscape. The most elaborate of all of his woodland etchings, this plate displays the artist’s particular ability to capture the varied effects of sunlight dancing through the leaves and branches of the forest.
