Excellent signed proof impression from the only edition to be printed in the first state of the plate. After this edition had been printed, Frank Short cut off and destroyed the right-hand half of the plate and used the left-hand portion for an experiment in laying what he described as a “rebiting ground” – only about 13 impressions were printed from the plate after it was divided.
Frank Short loved the open coastal landscape in the Rye and Winchelsea area and he himself settled to live only a few miles from this area in the coastal town of Seaford, in Sussex.
On cream laid paper with full margins, as issued. Faint foxing, otherwise very fine original condition. |
