This elaborate plate showing the construction of the Trinity Building in New York and the ‘L’, or elevated train line, is one of Joseph Pennell’s earliest etchings of the towering sky scrapers of New York. The soaring buildings of the cities of America, the railway lines and associated industries were to become a recurring theme in Joseph Pennell’s printed works and reflect his early enthusiasms as a young artist when training at the Pennsylvania School of Industrial Art.
On Japanese-style mulberry paper, with full margins. Time tone at outer edges of sheet. Evidence of previous mounting verso, otherwise generally very good condition. |
