Excellent signed proof impression with exceptionally rich drypoint burr. One of only 24 signed proof impressions printed for the sole edition (a single proof was also printed in the first state of the plate).
The father of Eileen Alice Soper, George Soper was heavily influenced in all of his early printmaking by his friend and neighbour William Palmer Robins. George Soper and W.P.Robins sketched together and shared subjects; however, George Soper’s work was essentially more figurative than that of W.P.Robins, always featuring people or horses engaged in some form of daily activity. George Soper had been producing competent original work for some years before he sought out Frank Short’s guidance in matters of technique. He worked with Frank Short, between the years 1916 and 1920 and during this time his printed work went from strength to strength.
A superb example of George Soper’s mature work in pure drypoint, Evening, Zoyland was chosen by George Soper as his exhibition work at the Royal Scottish Academy, The Royal Academy in London and at The Royal Society of Painter-Etchers & Engravers for the year 1922.
Zoyland is thought to be an alternative spelling of Soyland, near Halifax in northern England. This work is typical of George Soper’s peaceful scenes of farming and country life of the period.
