Presentation proof, aside from the two normal editions of 75 signed proofs each; signed, titled and inscribed twice by William Walcot “To Mrs. J.B. Dunn, with the artist’s compliments. May 12, 1918”. Excellent impression printed in warm brownish-black ink with delicately wiped plate tone.
The sheer sense of scale which William Walcot could achieve in a small etching plate is rarely demonstrated to greater effect than in this remarkable etching of The Emperor Hadrian entering Ancient Salonika. In this superb image vast ceremonial banners hang from the gigantic archway which marks the entrance to ancient Salonika; standing proud above the triumphal procession, this colossal feat of ancient architecture is given scale by William Walcot’s distinctive impressionistic figures.
On cream laid F J Head & Co paper with full margins and deckle edge. Very good original condition. |
