Original Augustus John etching.
Exceptionally rare – one of only 3 proofs printed in the first state of the plate. The plate was later cut down considerably on three sides and only first published in its reduced state in an edition of 50 impressions in 1919 - impressions printed in 1919 are normally signed simply "John", without the artist's initials.
Outstanding early signed proof impression, printed many years prior to the only published edition. This posthumous portrait, based on a photograph of Mr. Beard, is one of Augustus John’s earliest etched works, dating from his time in Liverpool where he taught at the University from 1901-1902.
On cream laid paper with full margins and deckle edge. Very fine original condition. |
