Original Augustus John etching.
Excellent impression, with considerable use of plate tone to provide shading and contrast. From the only published edition of 25 signed proofs, as issued through the Chenil Gallery in 1906.
With one much later, sketchy exception, this work is Augustus John’s only etching of the male nude.
A carefully observed and precisely handled work, thought to date from his Liverpool period, Old Man, Seated draws upon the example of Augustus John’s great mentor of etching, Rembrandt. The refined draughtsmanship of this early etching, in contrast to Augustus John’s hastily sketched later plates, makes it abundantly clear why the artist’s early etchings have become his most sought after printed works.
Signed by the artist in pencil and inscribed in ink by the publisher, Knewstub, with his edition details. The plate of this etching was destroyed immediately after this edition had been printed.
On cream laid paper with full margins and deckle edge. Very fine condition. Image surface excellent. |
