Original Vernon Hill etching.
Artist’s trial proof impression of this very rare etching.
Designed as a pair to In the Path of War, this grim symbolic work is one of the most striking of Vernon Hill’s early etchings. The proud stone monument stands sentinel, the sole witness to the terrible events seen taking place in this desolate landscape with its solitary cottage and stark, leafless trees. In the foreground two tiny figures struggle, one raising his club for the final blow.
Excellent impression printed with plate tone. On cream laid paper with full, uneven margins and deckle edge. Very fine original condition. |
