The largest of all of Francis Seymour Haden’s printed works. This enormous etching, after the painting by J.M.W.Turner, proved to be so considerable an undertaking to print that Haden enlisted the help of the master printer Frederick Goulding to pull the proofs from a press which had to be specially made for the purpose.
One of only 6 proofs printed in Schneiderman’s 5th state (of 12), before the foul-biting and before the drypoint shading on the distant sail. With the full etched inscription faintly inked, but with the letters ‘R.A.’ after Turner’s name (not described by Schneiderman, who notes that it proved particularly difficult to determine the states of this plate). In the final state of this plate Haden transformed the image completely by reworking the entire surface of the plate with mezzotint engraving.
Signed trial proof impression printed in brown ink. A somewhat dry test printing on heavy wove paper (most known proofs of this plate are only partially inked), with margins. Laid on linen on a stretcher, with front mat applied over outer margins. Some spotting and discolouration towards edges of sheet. One brown spot in the image, otherwise generally good original condition. In the original mahogany frame with gilt slip.
