Original Augustus John etching.

Very good impression printed with considerable plate tone and wiped to create good contrast. From the only published edition of 50 signed proofs, as issued by Knewstub in 1919.

Most of Augustus John's early plates were produced for practice and without commercial intent. The plates were stored by the artist with no great care, and it was not until Knewstub revived them for his 1906 publication that any methodical edition was taken. This plate of Nude Girl Seated, with one Knee Raised was only published in one edition of fifty signed impressions in 1919, although it is known to have been etched many years earlier.

Signed in full "Aug.E. John" in pencil. Numbered, titled and also numbered with Knewstub's plate number in lower margin in ink, as was Knewstub's practice. The plate is known to have been destroyed immediately after this edition of fifty impressions had been printed.

On cream laid paper with full margins and deckle edge. Remains of paper tape and evidence of previous mounting verso, otherwise very good original condition. Image surface excellent.
