Original D.Y. Cameron etching.

Exceptionally rare. One of the only two impressions traced by Rinder just prior to the release of his 1932 catalogue raisonné of D.Y. Cameron’s etchings.

One of the great rarities of Sir David Young Cameron’s etched work, A Stairway in Genoa was etched at the time the artist was working on the subjects for his North Italian Set. An unusual subject and a fascinating exercise in perspective, this highly accomplished work remained unpublished for unknown reasons. The existence of this etching was only first discovered with the appearance of this particular impression at J.&R. Edmiston’s sale in March 1931. Only one other impression of this etching is recorded in existence – this is currently in a private collection.

Very good impression, printed with considerable platetone. On heavy wove ‘plate’ paper of the type often used by D.Y. Cameron for proofing the earliest impressions of his etched works. With margins as prepared by the artist. Remains of old paper tape at extreme edges of sheet, otherwise very fine original condition. Image surface excellent.
