Original Martin Hardie drypoint.
Outstanding trial proof impression with bright contrast and strong drypoint burr, prior to the normal edition. Signed and inscribed by the artist in ink “Trial Proof 6 (15)”. Laver records the existence of only 8 trial proofs, printed prior to the sole edition of 60 normal impressions.
In his later works, such as Ajaccio, Martin Hardie used a fine, flowing drypoint line and relied increasingly upon the white of the paper to intensify the tranquility at which he had always aimed. This serene view of the port of Ajaccio, the principal city of Corsica, is a simple yet beautiful example of his contemplative mature landscape works.
On cream laid paper with full margins and deckle edge. Faint mat line; time toned verso, otherwise very fine original condition. |
