Excellent signed proof impression with strong etched line, printed with delicate plate tone.

The vast majority of Sir Frank Short’s original printed works were created as pure etchings and it is as an etcher that Short exerted his fundamental influence upon the following generations of printmakers. A South Coast Road, Pegwell Bay displays all of the hallmarks which define Frank Short’s own work and which he passed on so successfully to his students. The salient features and a few small details are strongly etched - the composition spreads out from these with ever more minimal line, allowing the white of the paper to create the remaining image and to introduce the element of light. It is a distinctive style, diametrically opposed to the enclosed work of Samuel Palmer, allowing the artist an unlimited sense of space and freedom for his needle.

On pale cream laid paper with full margins and deckle edge. Faintest suggestion of time tone within window area, otherwise excellent original condition.
