Original D.Y. Cameron etching with drypoint.

A particularly fine, early impression before the removal of all of the shadow at the right of the buttress above the level of the parapet.

One of two etchings which Sir David Young Cameron made of the famous chimera of Amiens cathedral and one of the artist’s best known etched works. The extraordinary stone gargoyles and chimera of the great cathedrals of France have been the subject of many etchers’ works from the time of Charles Meryon to the present day. John Taylor Arms found the texture of their weathered features a challenge for his needle whilst Meryon and D.Y. Cameron have delighted in the dramatic compositions which their settings present. Learing down over the city of Amiens, far below, these fantastic creatures of stone appear both melancholy and threatening, possessing a strange, harsh beauty all of their own.

Sir David Young Cameron choose an impression of this work as his exhibition piece for the Royal Academy in 1911.

On fine laid paper, with margins, apparently as issued.
