One of five original drypoints made by Percy Smith for his scarce Wuthering Heights portfolio. Issued in an edition of only 25 impressions of each print, these unusual drypoints rarely appear on the market today. Unlike normal illustrative works, Percy Smith's images concern not so much Emily Bronte's original story, as the artist's interpretation of its setting in his own day and age.
Wuthering Heights had been the home of Heathcliff, the chief character in Emily Bronte's novel. Situated on the moors about six miles from Haworth, the author's home in Yorkshire, the building upon which Bronte's tale was based had fallen into disrepair and ruin - open to the moorland sheep and the frequent storms. Percy Smith depicts it in tragic mood, the lonely shell of the house standing stark against the grim and fobidding aspects of nature.
These drypoints share the dark emotive quality found throughout much of Percy Smith's work. They are a moving tribute the place which inspired one of the finest literary works which our land has known.
