Stephen Gooden was the foremost engraver of pictorial bookplates in England during his lifetime, producing notable plates for many famous collectors and even for the English Royal Family.
J.N. Hart, for whom this plate was designed, formed one of the most extensive collections of Stephen Gooden's work — the exceptionally fine impression offered here comes from his own personal collection.
