Original Fredrick Carter engraving with drypoint.

Rare pencil signed lifetime proof impression of far superior quality to the modern re-prints which have been printed from the uncancelled plate in recent years. Very fine proof impression, printed with plate tone.

This symbolic work is of central importance in Frederick Carter's belief in pagan mysticism. The exact significance of this image is obscure, however, the tree has long been an object of reverence in ancient European religions. Trees were inherent in the creation of Druidic circles and are still celebrated by the presence of the Christmas tree alongside the modern Christian religion. Tree of Life holds the key to much of Frederick Carter's ideology regarding the power of ancient ritual and the early Earth Gods. The influence of the work of William Blake upon Carter's imagery is seen clearly in this design.

On cream wove paper with full margins and deckle edge. Some very minor discolouration and surface dirt in outer margins, otherwise very good original condition.
