Original C.R.W. Nevinson etching with drypoint.
Very good, strong impression, aside from the declared signed edition. From the collection of David Strang, the printer of C.R.W.Nevinson's plates.
An unusual subject for C.R.W.Nevinson, Statue is a strong and effective piece of printmaking. The artist has achieved a remarkable sense of three-dimensional modelling, especially in view of the darkness of the lively sculpture which he has chosen to study.
A preparatory sketch for this etching, drawn in watercolours, was sold at Christie's in London earlier this year.
Provenance: Collection of K.M. Guichard, author of British Etchers, 1850-1940 (London, 1981) and with his collector's stamp in outer margin verso.
On cream laid paper, with margins. Very fine condition. |
