Unique working proof impression, printed on blue paper. The sole proof printed prior to the lettering on the stone tablet, lower left. In this unique working proof, the artist has added some suggestions of his intended lettering in very light pencil work (barely visible in the above .jpg image). Inscribed in pencil on the original mount with the artist’s name, the title and the comment “Only existing proof without lettering”.

This unique lithograph displays how much Gerald Spencer Pryse’s work shares the spirit of his friend and colleague Frank Brangwyn. Brangwyn had worked with Pryse in producing original lithographs for The Neolith as early as 1907 and both artists had often worked in similar figurative styles on large-scale compositions. Whilst Brangwyn turned to government projects such as the design of the Empire Panels for the House of Lords, Spencer Pryse turned to the large-scale art of the poster to propound Labour party propaganda.

On laid dark blue paper with narrow margins beyond the image on all sides. Hinged at upper edge into original card mount. Very good original condition.
