Original Dunoyer de Segonzac etching with aquatint, printed in colours.
Brilliant impression with fresh, vivacious colours, from the only edition of 100 signed and numbered proofs, issued for the album St. Tropez et la Provence, in 1966. Printed in shades of orange, terracotta, pale green, dark green, pale blue, mid-blue, grey-blue, beige, and black inks.
Dunoyer de Segonzac’s only colour etching with aquatint and one of the artist’s best known landscape views.
Dunoyer de Segonzac was essentially a Realist in his approach to depicting nature - an artist of exceptional fluency who sketched his work directly from nature on to the copper plate. In this respect he followed in the traditions of the Barbizon School, as is apparent from the marvellous plein air spaciousness of his landscape works. His masterly manipulation of line and extraordinary simplicity of composition allowed him to introduce an Impressionistic handling of light into his works, in a manner which is particularly apparent in this outstanding print. Most impressive of all, is his use of selective areas of freely applied local colour, through which he has achieved the spontaneous effect of his watercolour paintings. In view of the outstanding success of this print, it is surprising that Dunoyer de Segonzac did not use colour more extensively in his work as an original printmaker.
An artist who developed a particularly distinct personal style, Dunoyer de Segonzac is considered to have been one of the finest French landscape printmakers of the twentieth-century. Saint Tropez is his outstanding masterpiece of original printmaking and, regrettably, his sole colour etching.
