Thomas Creswick was one of the most highly acclaimed and successful of the Victorian landscape painters, and was also one of the leading early members of the Etching Club. It is his masterly handling of light which gives his finest etched landscapes, including Evening on the Common, such radiant brilliance. Samuel Palmer’s son, A.H. Palmer, tells us how his father studied the sky of this “tiny masterpiece” after completing his first etching of The Willow. The resulting development in Samuel Palmer’s style and ability can be seen in his highly acclaimed later plates, in which the construction of the sky imitates the irregular and intricate web of Thomas Creswick’s work almost exactly.

On cream chine appliqué on original warm white wove backing sheet, with full margins, as issued. Minor foxing at extreme edges of outer margins only, otherwise very fine original condition. Image surface excellent.
