Original John Copley lithograph.

One of John Copley’s best-known images, A Man presents the artist’s most highly stylised male nude. In this large original lithograph Copley has taken a very modern approach and has chosen to compare and contrast the rippling contours of muscle and sinew with the rigidity of the rugged rock forms behind.

John Copley’s art remained both modern in style and highly innovative throughout his life. In particular, men in motion or at work, with muscles taught, intrigued him as both artist and observer. A Man is arguably the outstanding example of John Copley’s unique style and of his distinct portrayal of human form.

John Copley printed the majority of his lithographs himself, often with the assistance of his wife, the accomplished lithographer Ethel Gabain. He regarded the inking and printing of the stone as a continuation of the creative process, believing that only the artist himself can bring out the finest qualities in his own drawing. This excellent impression attests to this belief.

On warm white laid Van Gelder Zonen paper with margins, as issued. Generally very good original condition.
