Original Eleanor Hughes etching.

Outstanding proof impression from the artist's own collection, signed with the artist’s signature stamp.

This large and unusual etched view is one of Hughes’ few architectural etchings. The strange viewpoint which she has chosen is characteristic of her work, providing only partial views of almost every element of the composition. It is as if the artist was intentionally trying to keep the viewer guessing - only the roofs and chimneys of the houses are visible, scaffolding is barely suggested at the right, the viaduct itself is seen only in part, disappearing abruptly from the edges of the plate, whilst the presence of an unseen train is suggested by a small plume of steam at the upper left of the image. One cannot but regret that Hughes did not make more of these visually fascinating architectural etchings.

On cream laid F J Head & Co paper with full margins and deckle edge. Some mild discolouration in outer margins, otherwise very good original condition.
