Excellent impression from the only edition of 65 signed proofs.
The Heart of Scotland is the outstanding work amongst a small group of Scottish etchings and drypoints commissioned from Malcolm Osborne by the publisher H.C. Dickins. The enormous success of these prints, which sold out at once, led to further commissions from Dickins who henceforth became Malcolm Osborne’s publisher.
In his leading article on Malcolm Osborne, the doyen critic of the day, Malcolm Salaman, described this drypoint as a plate of great and romantic beauty, “so deeply informed with poetry and romance. Here the drypoint responded to vision with rare delicacy in suggesting the pictorial effect of distance.” (PCQ, 1925, p.298). It remains the most beautiful of all of Malcolm Osborne’s landscape works.
On pale cream laid paper with full margins and deckle edge. One short, totally unobtrusive pressure line, otherwise very fine condition. |
