Very rare first state proof. Inscribed in pencil by the artist “‘The Crystal Stream’ 1st state. Joseph Webb”. Lifetime proof impression – this plate remained unpublished until 67 years after its completion when, in 1989 an edition of 25 numbered proofs was printed by Hilary Scott. This early proof impression was printed by the artist himself, using considerable plate tone.
The Crystal Stream is one of Webb’s few romantic landscape studies not to contain an architectural element; mystical in mood, it is one of the finest small examples of his inspired etched imagery.
On heavy cream wove paper with margins. Excellent original condition. |
