Very good impression, as printed by Delâtre and issued in the Gazette des Beaux-Arts.
Pastorale is one of the few original etchings which Frederic, Lord Leighton is known to have produced, the majority of prints after his designs being reproductive works made by professional engravers. This delicate etching is characteristic of Leighton’s ideal neo-classical subjects. Leighton was to become the leader of the Victorian neo-classical painters and the central pillar of the Victorian art establishment. He was knighted in 1878, made a baronet in 1886, and raised to the peerage in 1896 – he remains the only English artist ever to have been accorded this honour.
On cream laid paper with full margins, as issued. Mild time tone to sheet, otherwise very good original condition. Image surface excellent. |
