William Walcot’s superb architectural etchings of London, such as this view of the Euston Road, with the entrance to the St. Pancras Station Hotel at the left of the image and old St. Pancras Town Hall to the right, have always been the most sought-after of his works. Here, he has combined architectural accuracy with an impressionistic representation of the busy London streets to create a vivacious scene, true to life. Indeed, William Walcot’s extraordinary ability to suggest moving people in a flurry of etched or drypoint lines is without comparison in modern British etching.
Commissioned by Sir Valentine Crittall, this plate was issued under the title Changing London - Euston Road at St. Pancras.
On cream wove paper with margins. Faint time tone verso, otherwise very fine condition. |
