Excellent impression of this impressive portrait study of the sculptor Jacob Epstein. Presentation proof dedicated by the artist “To Charles Webb from Jacob Kramer 1935”.
The sheer monumentality of this impressive portrait study is perfectly suited to its sitter, the famous sculptor Sir Jacob Epstein. Jacob Epstein was born in New York in 1880 but moved to Paris in 1902 and subsequently to England in 1905. It was here, in England, that he achieved his international fame, first through the scandal created by the statues commissioned for the British Medical Association (erected in 1908) and subsequently through the many imaginative sculptures which he produced for public locations throughout this country and overseas. Jacob Epstein's portraits in bronze have an over-lifesize quality, partly due to their vigorous handling which is reminiscent of the work of Rodin. By the date of this lithograph, Jacob Epstein had already created his outstanding bronze bust of Jacob Kramer (Tate Gallery, London) and the two artists had been friends for many years.
Although published in an edition of 50 numbered proofs, impressions of this print are now scarce.
On smooth cream wove paper with wide margins, as issued. Some mild foxing in outer areas of sheet, otherwise very fine condition. |
