Edward Gordon Craig

Edward Gordon Craig’s importance in the re-introduction of wood engraving to this country, as both an original art form and as a means of illustration, cannot be overstated. He was, without doubt, the supreme exponent and the principal protagionist of the technique in England. E.G.Craig’s innovative approach took the techniques of wood engraving beyond bounds never previously attempted and he is considered soley responsible for the revival of this art form as a means of illustration for private press books.

Son of the actress Ellen Terry, Edward Gordon Craig was driven by an overriding passion for the theatre. Indeed, he first decided to master the technique of wood engraving in order to illustrate theatrical magazines of his own.
