The painter and wood engraver James Bateman, was a native of the Lake District in north western England. After studying at the Royal College of Art (1914-19) and the Slade School of Art (1919-21) he progressed to pursue a successful career as a professional artist and wood engraver. J. Bateman's finest wood engravings, such as Mare and Foal, are invariably concerned with aspects of the farming countryside of his youth. |
