Born at Waal in Bavaria, Hubert Herkomer was taken by his parents to America at the age of two. After six years, the family left for England, where Hubert was to live for the rest of his life. He was immensely successful as an artist and is best known for his high Victorian portraiture, and his paintings of social genre. A masterly technician in both etching and engraving, Hubert Herkomer experimented extensively in new printmaking techniques; he taught and wrote on printmaking methods and lectured widely on technique. Widely honoured throughout his life, Hubert von Herkomer was knighted in 1907. [more]
