Excellent impression with strong, even black inking. From the only edition of 20 signed proofs. Proofs of this wood engraving are now rare as all of the wood blocks which Hermes engraved prior to 1928, along with many of the signed proof impressions, were destroyed when the river Thames flooded her basement studio flat on 7th January 1928.

Gertrude Hermes is now considered to have been one of the most creative female wood engravers of her generation and one of the most accomplished exponents of the white-line technique. Her engravings are both dramatic and highly stylised in their approach, reflecting her training as a sculptor in their remarkable interpretation of form. Gertrude Hermes was a close friend of both Henry Moore and Leon Underwood, working together with them on a number of joint ventures. [more]
