Excellent impression from the only edition of 50 signed and numbered proofs, as published by the artist through the influential Twenty-One Gallery.
It was W.A.Narbeth’s biblical images which were to establish his reputation as an etcher. Christ before the People is typical of these dramatic religious compositions, drawn with strong chiaroscuro effect. This skilled and imaginative printmaker was a finalist for the Prix de Rome in his last year at Goldsmith’s College but, like so many of the talented young etchers who came to the scene towards the tail end of the etching revival, the collapse of the market for original black-and-white prints resulted in a very limited output which has never been fully documented.
On cream laid paper with full margins. Mild discolouration towards extreme edge of sheet, otherwise very good original condition. Image surface excellent.
