Original Francis Seymour Haden etching with drypoint.
Excellent impression with strong contrast, as issued in Francis Seymour Haden’s first publication, Études à l’eau-forte. In subsequent states of the plate the black cat, seen standing at the end of the pier in the foreground, was removed and replaced by a monkey holding a sword.
This etching shows a view of the Thames at Battersea from the window of Whistler’s house. Francis Seymour Haden was related to Whistler through marriage to Whistler’s half-sister Deborah and at this time the two artists visited one another regularly. A hot air balloon can be seen flying over Battersea railway bridge in the distance.
On cream laid Van Gelder paper, with margins. Unidentified collector’s stamp at lower left corner of sheet. Very fine condition. |
