Very good impression, from the only published edition, as issued in 1844 in one of the Etching Club’s earliest publications, Etch’d Thoughts. Scarce.

The Expected Return typifies Victorian art and is a fine example of Richard Redgrave’s highly accomplished sentimental genre portrait scenes. One of a number of works by Richard Redgrave to depict a solitary woman at a moment of emotive reflection, The Expected Return is a depiction of Southey’s text “Fancy, impatient of all painful thoughts, / Pictured the bliss should welcome his return. … And Hope and Memory made a mingled joy.”

On warm white India paper applied to original white wove backing sheet, as issued, with margins. Minor foxing at upper edge of sheet, otherwise generally very good original condition.
