Chagrins d’Amour – Kusaie, Est Carolines, or The Sorrows of Love, Kusaie, East Carolines, was one of the most popular of Paul Jacoulet’s multiple colour woodblock prints. Maeda, Jacoulet’s carver, considered the delicate claws of the scarlet parrot circling the lovestruck young woman’s finger to be one of his best carvings. The vivid blues, green and red contrast with the flowers and the tattered leaves in a way that is peculiarly Jacoulet’s.

The blocks for this work were carved by Paul Jacoulet’s favourite cutter, Kentaro Maeda and this impression was printed under Paul Jacoulet’s personal supervision by Tetsunosuke Honda.

On firm cream simile Japan paper with full margins and deckle edge. Generally very fine original condition. Image surface excellent.
