Excellent impression with striking contrast and wonderful tonal variation. From the only edition of 75 signed and numbered proofs.
This striking work was one of the first wood engravings which George Mackley made of the watersways of Holland. The Netherlands were to provide the subject matter of wood engravings for George Mackley throughout the 1960's and were to prove to be the subject of his final engraved works. Gateway combines all aspects of Mackley's art as a wood engraver with its distinctive architecture, its characteristic bridge, boats, windswept trees and wonderfully varied sky. Indeed, Gateway could be regarded as the definitive wood engraving by George Mackley.
On simile Japan paper with full margins and deckle edge. Very fine original condition. |
