Original Clifford Addams etching with touches of drypoint.
First state proof, before any of the tonal drypoint work was added. The artist's own working proof, from the artist’s own personal collection.
This exceptionally rare first state proof impression shows the work in its etched form, before the artist added considerable drypoint work to darken the sky and create atmospheric effect. In this exceptionally early state, every aspect of topographical detail is clearly visible; whereas, in the subsequent state much of this detail has given way to the dark atmospheric effects which the artist introduced through considerable new drypoint work.
This view shows London’s Waterloo Place from outside the Athenaeum Club, looking up the length of Lower Regent Street towards Piccadilly Circus. The monument to the Crimean War stands prominent in the right-hand foreground.
On cream wove paper, watemarked GM, with full margins and deckle edge. Very good original condition. |
