Original Robin Tanner etching.
Very good impression with strong, dark line. Signed by the artist in pencil; from the edition issued in 1977.
Robin's Tanner magnificent etching of The Old Road engulfs the viewer in the richness of the English countryside: beyond an old wooden gate, the eye is led along an ancient lane which wanders gently past rolling fields of corn, protected and dominated by the towering forms of great English Elm trees. As one of the last true exponents of traditional British etching, Robin Tanner seems to share in the sense of loss which disease threatened to these magnificent trees and in this remarkable etching he celebrates them in their fullness, surrounded by the fecundity of nature.
Robin Tanner was the last of the generation of English etchers to continue the traditions of Samuel Palmer, Graham Sutherland and F.L.M. Griggs. Tanner celebrated the beauty of the English countryside and its rustic settings in an idyllic pastoral manner unique in his time. His is the supremely crafted plate, developed through elaborate care and attention, and worked with a dense web of etched lines through which the light of the paper is allowed to sparkle. The density of this etched web is used to control the varying tones and create the final image.
On cream wove paper with margins, as issued. Excellent original condition.
