Boats and waterways are recurring subjects throughout George Mackley’s outstanding wood engravings. Having been based in Tonbridge during his youth, George Mackley continued to visit the nearby coast around Hastings in Sussex throughout his life. The background of this image is based on the view of the Seven Sisters cliffs as seen from closeby Seaford and Cuckmere Haven; however, Mackley is likely to have made studies for the fishing boats at the rather busier fishing port of Hastings itself. Characteristically, it is the interplay of light which has fascinated the artist and George Mackley has depicted these contrasts beautifully in this skillfully executed wood engraving.
On smooth cream wove paper with full margins. Excellent original condition. |
