Superb, rich impression from the only edition of 50 signed and numbered proofs.
Towards the end of his stay in Italy William E.C.Morgan turned increasingly to the drypoint medium. In this portrait of a musician from the Italian hill towns, W.E.C.Morgan has used the combined techniques of line engraving and drypoint. The carefully modelled portrait of the sitter’s head has been completed in pure line engraving and Morgan has used the engraved line to lay in the fundamental outlines of the rest of the design. However, he has used drypoint to emphasise the shadows and the rich dark texture of Antonio’s waistcoat and trousers, thereby giving the design much greater three-dimensional force.
On cream laid paper with full margins and deckle edge. Mild time tone within mat window area, otherwise very fine original condition. Image surface excellent. |
