Marsh Mallow 1916 |
|
Original etching. Signed and inscribed in pencil. Hardie 354 i/ii S 247 x 353 mm; P & I 178 x 253 mm SOLD |

One of only 3 or 4 proofs printed in the first state of the plate, inscribed by the artist in pencil “first biting”. In this exceptionally early state of the plate, much detail has yet to be introduced across the foreground, in the sky and to the right of the plate; the signature and date have not yet been inserted.
This etching shows the view of a farm near Acle, in Norfolk. The plate derives its name from the tall mallow plants seen growing across the foreground at the left of the image.
On cream wove paper, watermarked O.W.P. & A.C.L., with full margins. Very fine original condition. |
