Original James Bateman wood engraving.
Very strong, evenly printed impression from the only edition of 25 signed and numbered proofs.
The painter and wood engraver James Bateman, was a native of the Lake District in north western England. After studying at the Royal College of Art (1914-19) and the Slade School of Art (1919-21) he progressed to pursue a successful career as a professional artist and wood engraver. His finest wood engravings, such as Mare and Foal, are invariably concerned with aspects of the farming countryside of his youth.
On fine laid Japan-style paper with full margins and deckle edge. One or two isolated foxing spots, otherwise good original condition. |
