Excellent signed proof impresssion with rich drypoint burr, printed by the artist himself.
One of the artist’s, finest printed works of Paris, this superb etching and drypoint displays the striking chiaroscuro which Mortimer Menpes introduced to his architectural studies in order to enhance the three-dimensional appearance of the ornate stonework of the building depicted.
The Church of La Sorbonne, Paris is one of a number of drypoints of Paris which Mortimer Menpes made during his prolonged stay in the city, whilst working on illustrations for his wife’s book entitled Paris (Adam and Charles Black, London, 1907).
On cream laid paper with full margins and deckle edge. Very fine original condition. |
