Rare pencil signed proof impression on large paper, as released in the special proof edition of the very scarce 1879 Etching Club portfolio.
Excellent impression from the personal collection of the prominent Victorian artist, Richard Redgrave R.A.
This heavily etched work by John Pettie displays the artist’s interest in experimenting with strong chiaroscuro. The extended arm of the Highlander has been left comparatively free of etched work, to stand out highlit against the heavily etched darkened background of a cave. The foreground on which he stands is spotlit in almost theatrical manner.
On soft simile Japan paper with full margins. Very fine original condition. |
