Excellent hand burnished proof with shading added at the left of the image by the artist in pencil. A very fine example of this complex subject, from the only edition of signed proofs.
George Mackley specialised in wood engravings of waterways and their bridges. Here, he has chosen a scene which includes all of the elements of the typical Kent landscape with its winding hedge-lined lanes, from its picturesque rivers with lock gates and weirs, to its country churches and farms with their oast houses for drying the local hops. The wide variety of textures found throughout this scene has allowed George Mackley to demonstrate his astonishing technical ability as a white-line wood engraver to the full.
On smooth cream wove paper, with full margins. Slight time tone in outer margins of sheet, otherwise very good original condition. |
