Original Stanley Anderson etching.
One of only two impressions in the first state of the plate.
Brilliant early working proof impression with crisp clarity of line. Inscribed by the artist “1st State 2 proofs” and signed in ink.
Venus and Adonis is the outstanding early example of Stanley Anderson’s series of etchings and engravings depicting the tramps of London and Paris. These poignant works have come to form an unusual social document of a side of life rarely portrayed in the fine arts. Despite this, Stanley Anderson has delivered subjects such as this marvellously titled scene of a one-legged tramp admiring a sleeping vagrant with an insight and a balance to the composition which elevate it far above its natural content.
Working proofs of any of Stanley Anderson’s etchings or engravings are extremely rare.
On cream wove paper, watermarked F J Head & Co, with full margins and deckle edge. Very fine original condition. Image surface excellent. |
