One of only 6 proofs printed of this unpublished etching.

Superb signed proof impression, printed in sanguine ink with considerable plate tone. Designed as one of six illustrations intended for the Golden Cockerel Press 1932 edition of The Amores of P.Ovidius Naso…, but unused in the final publication. This image was intended to illustrate the passage on page eight of the book which reads:
“O doorkeeper, bound in the degredation of hard chains, I pray you set open the intractable door upon its hinges”.

On cream wove paper, watermarked BFK Rives, with full margins and deckle edge. Very fine original condition. Image surface excellent.
