Brilliant early proof impression, with exceptional clarity of line. One of only 5 special proofs printed before the plate was steelfaced, prior to the published edition. Inscribed in pencil by the artist “Avant aciérage IV/V”.
One of the artist’s most famous original line engravings, La Peste is the archetypal Philippe Mohlitz image, depicting the rotting hulk of a ship which has been marooned for decades after running aground, its crew having died of the plague. This large early work is still amongst the most sought-after of all of Philippe Mohlitz’s printed works.
On warm white BFK Rives wove paper with full margins and deckle edge. Small stain in upper outer margin and one short nick at extreme right edge of sheet, otherwise very fine original condition. Image surface excellent. |
