Joseph Pennell is amongst the best known of all American etchers. Through his own massive output and his forceful writing, Joseph Pennell became the leading advocate of original etching in America during the early part of the twentieth century. Joseph Pennell spent much of his life in London, where he became closely associated with Whistler, adopting much of that great master’s later etching style. Pennell and his wife became Whistler’s foremost publicists and between them, they produced Whistler’s biography. An outstanding draughtsman who worked with remarkable speed, Joseph Pennell produced some of the finest etchings of the period, and after about 1910 also turned his prodigious skills to the medium of lithography.
